Section Assessment: Rake in the Muck!
Photography emerged as a form of technology, communication, and art in the early 1800s. By the time the 20th century began, there were thousands of photographers across the United States. Jacob Riis, who notably published "How the Other Half Lives", used photography to draw attention to the downside of the Gilded Age, ultimately entering America into the Progressive Era.
In this assessment, you will be "raking the muck" on what was going on in the Progressive Era. In the form of an online news article using GLOGSTER.com, include the following:
In this assessment, you will be "raking the muck" on what was going on in the Progressive Era. In the form of an online news article using GLOGSTER.com, include the following:
- Choose four topics on your own relating to the Progressive Era's impact on history. You can choose reform movements, events, or even short biographies on individuals.
- You may create a single page or a group of pages on your topic. For each topic in your news article, include a minimum of one paragraph of information and a photo using Riis publication or a reliable website listed below.
- Don't forget, YOU are reporting what you are "seeing" during this time period. We are your audience, so publish as if we are hearing if for the first time. Remember the basics: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How.

- Political Reform: Municipal reforms, state reforms, Maverick reform politicians, Growth of socialism in America (Eugene Debs).
- Women's Rights: Suffrage, birth control, the "New Woman"
- Temperance: Women's Christian Temperance Union, Prohibition Laws, 18th Amendment
- Immigration: Immigration restriction laws, Settlement houses
- Business Reform: Monopolies, Labor reforms/workers protection, consumer protection laws.
