Unit 6: Kennedy, Johnson and the Vietnam War
This unit encompasses the Presidencies of Kennedy and Johnson, along with the entirety of the war in Vietnam, beginning with French colonialism and the Vietnamese efforts to gain independence through World War Two. First we will look at the policies of Kennedy and Johnson at home and abroad and how their efforts to contain communism affected the United States. Then, after examining why the United States first sided with the French in its post-war efforts to maintain control of Indochina and then took over the effort to pacify the resistance, a thorough look into the nature and main events and concepts of the war is taken. A study of the anti-war movement at home and the role of the media is also embarked upon. The unit closes with an evaluation of Nixon's war policies and the effects of the war on all parties involved.
